One day, a businessman visits the village and suggests the fisherman could work harder, catch more fish, and reinvest his earnings to grow a fishing empire. He explains that with time, the fisherman could hire others to do the fishing, allowing him to retire rich and finally relax. To which the fisherman responds, “But isn’t that what I’m already doing?”

The parable brilliantly illustrates the concept of “enoughness.” But like many utopian visions, it fails to account for the inherent unpredictabilities of real life.

What if the fisherman’s country faces political unrest or war? Wealthy Jews, for example, found it easier to escape Nazi Germany than their poorer counterparts.

Or what if a drought, pollution, or overfishing depletes the fish population? Or a storm wipes out his boat?

What happens when the fisherman gets older and his physical ability to fish declines?

And how has this idyllic fishing village escaped the omniscient gaze of both BlackRock and Hilton, and with them scores of tourists and more technologically-advanced industry, including fishing?

Add in the fact that most of us don’t live in a detached fishing village, or even know how to fish, and you can start to see the dangers of following the philosophy of the fisherman.

A (Highly-Solvable) Crisis

Like the fisherman completely at the mercy of external forces, nearly 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.1

What would happen if you lost your job or faced an unexpected medical bill? Crippling debt? Bankruptcy? Homelessness?

Financial illiteracy is a legitimate crisis.

But there is good news. While the businessman suggested the fisherman work harder to achieve independence, I suggest you can achieve independence while doing less work, at least when it comes to managing (or worrying) about your finances.

And the best part? With independence you unlock a whole new world of opportunity. You could live according to your values and goals and chosen pursuits. You could stop trading your today’s for future tomorrow’s.

You could say “F-You” to anyone who asks you to compromise your values—but choose not to. The alternative is terrifying. The stakes are literally life-changing.

But how do we get there?

For answers, let’s turn to a janitor from Dummerston, Vermont.

The $8 Million Janitor and Three Simple Rules

“Ronald Read was an American philanthropist, investor, janitor, and gas station attendant.”

What do you notice about the first sentence of Ronald Read’s Wikipedia page?

That you’ve never seen “philanthropist” associated with “janitor?” Or maybe you’re wondering how a man with such modest jobs even has a Wikipedia page. Or are you still stuck on the section header trying to figure out how a janitor died with a net worth of $8 million?

I’ll skip to the punchline—he followed the three simple rules2 to accumulate wealth:

Avoid debt.

Spend less than you earn.

Invest the rest.

Steps one and two are self-explanatory and difficult largely thanks to human nature and a coordinated effort to get you to spend more.

Fear and misconceptions around step three is a common roadblock for many people, so we’ll cover the “how” and “how much” below.

But first, let’s talk about the little-known most important factor in your time to independence: savings rate.

The Single Biggest Win: Savings Rate

How could someone like Ronald Read, who likely earned around $30,000 per year, die with almost $10 million, while Mike Tyson, who earned $30,000,000 per fight, end up bankrupt?

The answer is not-so-shockingly simple: he spent less relative to his income.

Lest I lose your interest, this isn’t a call to a spartan lifestyle. (Ronald might have found more balance, and Iron Mike definitely could have used more impulse control.) Rather, it’s to highlight the immense impact small changes to your savings habits can have on your journey to independence.

For instance, an average earner bringing home $50,000 annually and saving 5% could shave 15 years off their time to retirement by simply saving an additional $48 per week. That’s one round of drinks on the weekend!

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Credit: Mr. Money Mustache. Too many people overlook the opportunity costs of their decisions, ranging from that round of drinks to buying a home.

While the debate between “earning more” vs. “spending less” rages on in the personal finance world, one thing is certain from our opening example: it doesn’t matter how much you earn if you’re not saving a portion of it.

And remember, your savings rate is a flexible lever. You can increase it by boosting your income or by cutting expenses—or ideally, a bit of both.

That’s why focusing on increasing your savings rate is the single biggest win in your path to financial independence.

Plan with Buckets, not a Budget

So, how does this look in practice?

Let’s go step-by-step:

Set a realistic target savings rate.

List your expenses from the past three months.

Categorize each transaction (e.g., “401k transfer,” “dining,” “rent”).

Group these transactions into four major buckets: “Fixed costs,” “Investments,” “Savings goals,” and “Guilt-free spending.”

For each month, calculate your actual savings rate. (Add your savings and investments, divide by take-home pay, then multiply by 100.)

Compare your actual savings rate to your target. If your rate exceeds your goal, celebrate! If it falls short, still celebrate—then look for ways to close the gap.

Here are Ramit Sethi’s suggested target allocations for reference:

Fixed costs (rent, utilities, debt, etc.): 50-60% of take-home pay

Investments (401k, Roth IRA, etc.): 10%

Savings goals (vacations, gifts, house down payment, emergency fund, etc.): 5-10%

Guilt-free spending (dining out, entertainment, clothes, etc.): 20-35%

And here’s an example of what this breakdown could look like:
<div However, because no other asset classes have outpaced the stock market over the long term, I use it as a benchmark. Add in the fact that it’s a passive investment requiring little to no management, comes with low fees (expense ratios), and is accessible to nearly anyone, it’s currently the gold standard for most people. But that doesn’t mean it will always be. No one can predict the future. So whether you’re investing in yourself, starting a business, buying real estate or Pokémon cards, the same principles apply: avoid debt, spend less than you earn, invest the not to do (covered below), you can make a decision about what’s the best investment for you.

Personally, I currently invest in three main areas: myself (through skill development), the US stock market (VTSAX), and a combination of BTC/ETH/SOL. While not everyone would agree with this approach, I have my reasons, and I sleep well at night.

A common rebuttal is that investing is "risky." Let’s address that. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, risk is "the possibility of something bad happening."

If we accept this definition, then risk is unavoidable.

Every decision and action carries some level of risk, so instead of trying to avoid it altogether—which is impossible—we should focus on calculating and managing it effectively.

For me, the risks of not investing—such as losing purchasing power to inflation and missing out on growth opportunities—far outweigh the risks of investing.

As with most things, it’s important to learn the rules so you can break them effectively.

However, some rules are better left unbroken. We’ll cover those next.

Compound Interest’s Evil Twin

As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest risks of not investing is the lost potential for long-term growth, also known as “opportunity cost.”

Think of opportunity cost as the evil twin of compound interest.

It’s the inspiration behind all those “skip your latte, become a millionaire” clickbait articles.

Though the “skip a latte” argument is flawed (where does it stop?), the premise is sound: small amounts of money grow exponentially over time thanks to compound interest. Spend that money elsewhere, and you miss out on the interest it would have earned—along with the compounding interest on that interest.

It’s worth repeating: this isn’t about asceticism; it’s about awareness.

Once you understand the trade-offs, you might decide your daily coffee is worth the cost—and that’s great. But what about bigger purchases, like a car?

Take, for example, choosing between a $20,000 car and a $30,000 car. The $30,000 option isn’t just $10,000 more—it’s $10,000 plus the interest that money could have earned, and the compounding interest on top of that interest, ad infinitum.

The effect is even more pronounced if you finance the car. Now, you’re not only missing out on compound interest—you’re actually paying interest on the loan.

Remember the earlier chart showing how $100 grew over time? And how saving $48 per week impacted your retirement forecast to the tune of 15 years? I’ll let you do the math on the car purchase.

I know I’m sounding like a broken record, but here’s one more example to show how a long time horizon can make seemingly trivial amounts grow significantly. We’ll compare using a commission-based financial advisor with investing in the S&P 500, using the 10% saver example from earlier.

Scenario 1 (No financial advisor fee):

$0 initial investment

$5,000 annual contributions ($417 per month)

8% return over 40 years

Final value: $1,295,283

Scenario 2 (With 1% advisor fee):

$0 initial investment

$5,000 annual contributions

7% return over 40 years

Final value: $998,176

In Scenario 1, your money grows at 8% over 40 years, resulting in about $1.3 million. In Scenario 2, the 1% advisor fee reduces your return to 7%, costing you nearly $300,000 over the same period.

But wait, there’s more! The S&P 500 is also appealing because of its extremely low expense ratios. For example, the Vanguard VOO fund has an expense ratio of just 0.03%, compared to the 0.42% average6 for actively managed mutual funds with an advisor.

After factoring in expense ratios, here’s how the numbers break down:

Scenario 1 (0.03% expense ratio): With a 0.03% expense ratio, $5,000 annual contributions, and an 8% market return over 40 years, your investment would grow to $1,285,097.

Scenario 2 (1% advisor fee + 0.42% expense ratio): With a 1% advisor fee and a 0.42% expense ratio, your effective return drops to 6.58%, and after 40 years, your final amount would be 896,251.

The difference is eye-popping: Scenario 2 leaves you with $388,846 less than Scenario 1 due to the combined impact of the advisor fee and higher expense ratio.

And this assumes equal returns. In fact, the S&P 500 outperformed most actively managed large cap stock funds for the 14th year in a row.7 Approximately 88% of actively managed large-cap funds underperformed the S&P 500 over the long term.8

To summarize, an average earner investing a modest amount could pay nearly $400,000 in fees to a commission-based advisor over 40 years, only to almost certainly underperform the market.

The madness!

By now, it should be clear: you want to keep your money in the market and avoid unnecessary fees.

But what about the classic advice to “buy low, sell high”?

Time in the Market > Timing the Market

“The big money is not in the buying or selling, but in the waiting.” —Charlie Munger

Advice: Don’t Follow Investment Advice

Behind every investment strategy, there’s at least one charismatic evangelist with a persuasive pitch.

My advice: never blindly follow investment advice from anyone. This includes the obvious culprits whose follies range from misaligned incentives to downright deceit: financial influencers, media pundits, and the most dubious of all, commission-based financial advisors.

If they could consistently beat the market, do you think they’d be spending their time sharing those strategies with you out of the pureness of their soul?

But this advice extends even to well-intentioned family and friends—and yes, even me.9

Even if they’re financially savvy (a big “if”), their circumstances, values, and goals will likely differ from yours—at least to some extent.

So how can an inquiring novice cut through all the noise? There are two ways:

Study historical trends and undeniable math (like the S&P 500’s long-term returns vs alternative assets and the power of compound interest).

Learn what not to do.

Just as happiness often comes from eliminating unhappiness, financial literacy often stems from understanding financial mistakes—or simply knowing what not to do.

And now you’re aware of some of the biggest no-no’s that will keep you shackled to financial struggles:

Ignoring the three fundamental rules: avoiding debt, living below your means, and consistently investing.

Failing to understand the opportunity costs of your financial decisions.

Attempting to time the market.

By understanding the most rational financial choice in any situation, you’ll be able to confidently make reasonable decisions tailored to your unique circumstances.

YNAS: You Need a System

At this point, you might be wondering, “If it’s so simple, why isn’t everyone a millionaire?”

My response, though annoying, would be: “Well, it’s simple, but not easy.”

Why? Because humans are naturally wired to prioritize immediate gratification over long-term benefits—a tendency known as poor time preference.

This behavior is deeply embedded in our evolutionary makeup. When food was scarce, it made sense to consume as many calories as possible. Without a way to multiply resources for the future, people would naturally spend what they had.

And evolution, as we know, is a slow process.

One of the first stock exchanges, The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, opened in 1602—about 301,602 years after the emergence of the first humans.

In another 300,000 years, we’ll likely be better tuned to investing.

In the meantime, we’re battling not just our own human nature, but also cultural conditioning and a consumer-driven society—amplified by a billion-dollar advertising industry that has nearly perfected psychological manipulation.

Put together, it’s far from easy.

Thinking about personal finance usually engages system two, the brain's more energy-intensive mode of thinking. We must remain aware of our habits, track spending, resist impulses, and plan to optimize our income, which can be mentally exhausting.

So instead we buy the latest gadget, hire a personal driver for our takeout, complain about delivery fees owed to said driver, criticize the previous generation for not understanding our struggles, and binge-watch Netflix.

And so the dreadful personal finance cycle continues—guessing, hoping, checking, scolding, regretting, repenting, and repeating.

We need a system that protects us from us.

I’m working on building that system. But for now, manually setting up this system to automate your finances is a great place to start.

Your Life and Civilization Are at Stake

“Civilization is not about more capital accumulation per se; rather it is about what capital accumulation allows humans to achieve, the flourishing and freedom to seek higher meaning in life when their base needs are met.” —Saifedean Ammous

Now that you have a recipe, a day will come—presumably sooner than anticipated—when you’ll no longer have to trade today for tomorrow.

And you alone will decide how to seize that day.

Will you travel the world, marveling at its divine beauty? Will you finally dedicate time to mastering that elusive skill you’ve always longed to learn? Or will you pour your energy into a passion project, making your corner of the universe a better place to inhabit?

Life will be yours to bathe in.

The personal benefits are obvious. The desire for freedom—whether from shackles or neckties—has existed since the dawn of mankind.

"...because all man's efforts, all his impulses to life, are only efforts to increase freedom. Wealth and poverty, fame and obscurity, power and subordination, strength and weakness, health and disease, culture and ignorance, work and leisure, repletion and hunger, virtue and vice, are only greater or lesser degrees of freedom." —Leo Tolstoy

But can the accumulation of individual wealth benefit society and help advance civilization?

Despite cultural conditioning that fosters a near-sociopathic disdain for wealth and its holders, the answer is a resounding “yes.”

Could da Vinci have painted the Mona Lisa after a long day laboring on the farm? Would Newton have seen that apple fall and discover gravity while staring out the window of his cubicle? Could Darwin, as a factory worker, have formulated the theory of evolution?

John Adams famously said, "I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain."

In that same spirit, we must accumulate and pass down wealth so that our children have the freedom to learn and create amongst the stars.10

1

Source: Charles Schwab 2019 Modern Wealth Survey Findings

2

From The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins

3

If you’re reading this, you’ll likely earn much more over time.

4

This assumes you currently have $0 invested.

5

Any time I mention the “S&P 500’s 40-year returns,” I am referring to the period between 1975 and 2015. The vision was an eco-friendly metropolis designed to accommodate 700,000 residents.

Today, there are around 9,000 residents (i.e., 691,000 short of plan), giving it an eerie atmosphere that has earned it the nickname “ghost city.”

The background is interesting. Here are the spark notes:

The development was aimed at affluent buyers, particularly from China.

In 2017, Xi Jingping implemented capital controls restricting Chinese nationals from transferring more than $50,000 out of the country annually. (Effectively removing the opportunity to purchase available island properties ranging from $75,000 to $1M+.)

COVID-19 and local political instability further exacerbated the demand problem.

On August 25, 2023, the island became a Special Financial Zone (SFZ) to attract foreign investment and revitalize development.

On September 23, 2024, I everything in motion.

I could count on two hands the number of people in the world who could send this email and deserve to be taken seriously. Balaji Srinivasan is at the top of the list.

For background, Balaji is an entrepreneur (with 9-figure exits), angel investor (GP at Andreessen Horowitz), professor (computational biology, statistics, computer science, engineering, and blockchain at Stanford), and author (The Network State).

I first heard him on this episode of The Tim Ferriss Show three and a half years ago, and he quickly earned a seat on my personal board of directors1. His association with the project sparked my curiosity; the characteristics of the program demanded my attention.

The full “why” exceeds the time and space we can dedicate here. But the most appealing aspects to me are the following:

The daily loop. If we’re being honest, it is hard to be the best version of ourselves. We spend so much time managing our day-to-day lives and meeting our material needs that our higher needs—community, hobbies, continuous learning, spiritual health—are often neglected. Indeed, even our foundational needs, like physical and emotional health, frequently get the scraps. If time is our most scarce resource (remember, we only have one go at this thing called life), then “I don’t have time to go to the gym” or “I don’t have time to shop for and cook a healthy meal” are actually valid concerns for most people in our time-poor modern society. Part of the vision here, at least how I interpret it, is to move as far up Maslow’s hierarchy in system one as possible. That’s to say, a community where access to healthy food, exercise, skill development, and quality sleep is as fundamental as access to running water.

Practical knowledge. It’s sort of a no-brainer to want to learn emerging technologies and humanities hands-on from some of the brightest minds in the entire world.

<div Is it a cult?”

These were the initial questions from my distressed sister a couple of days after I arrived. I’ll attempt to answer both.

Q: Are the people normal?

A: No. I would not consider a former paratrooper turned human trafficking interceptor turned software engineer and prominent crypto voice “normal.” Nor would I consider “normal” a different special forces operator living in an off-the-grid village in the Colombian jungle who teaches animal flow and wants to seamlessly merge the beneficial aspects of technology into his otherwise technology-resistant community. Nor is the 30-something-year-old former Dutch central bank employee who learned to code by creating arbitrage bots that automatically facilitate trades across crypto exchanges while he sleeps, and who now operates a platform that gives unbanked individuals access to AI tools via crypto payments (and grew from 0 to tens of thousands of users in the past two months). Nor the Indian developer who builds complex applications in a single day, leads Vipassana meditation classes in the evening, and teaches non-developers how to code at night. Nor the Australian (lol, nor and Australians go together like PB&J) neuroscientist and biomedical engineer using AI to explore brain activity. I could go on, but I’m running out of steam and I think you get the point: no, the people here are not normal, and yes, that’s a feature.

Q: Is it a cult?

A: Good luck trying to brainwash this group. This is a collection of the most independent thinkers and non-conformists I’ve ever been around.

The standard participant is not your Stanford PhD (besides Balaji), but the breadth and depth of talent and intellect here is actually astounding.

It’s said that if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. If nothing else, I know I’m not in the wrong room.

Just for fun

Note: I am well aware that “the opposite of success isn’t failure; it is name-dropping” but I’m going to do it anyways, otherwise I won’t have sufficiently painted the picture of the surrealness of it all.

Within the first two hours of my arrival, I 1) hang out with Balaji on the beach, discussing the idea of setting up autonomous boats to shuttle back and forth to Singapore. 2) Then, I am the first to arrive for food, by about 20 minutes, and sit down with Bryan Johnson (and his team of three), Vitalik, and a staff member from the Network School. 3) During this time, a storm blows the doors open, and Vitalik, Bryan’s son Talmage, and I work together to keep them shut by wedging umbrellas between the doors and lining up tables to prevent them from blowing open and flooding the room, all while Bryan films it.

In July, my dad, uncle, and I rode our bikes from Indy to Lake James. During the ride, my uncle joked that he needed a “blood boy.” This was in reference to Bryan Johnson and his son. Two months later, I am having a meal with Bryan Johnson and his son.

It’s pretty cool to see how fast things are being built here by The Network School. And shout out to the Malaysian government for their innovation-forward approach to regulation.

Everyone here seems to be organizing something. My contributions have been persistently asking for a weight room leaderboard (this is my best shot at glory among this crowd) and organizing a “muggle power hour” for non-developers to try to learn to code using AI. The problem is, the MPH became a hit and now I’m committed to the power hour every M-F from 8:00 - 9:00 pm. And I haven’t quite finished mapping out the definitive equation to end human suffering. (Although I reckon proper sleep gets us a disproportionate amount of the way there.)

But I do now understand how dogs respond to human language.

Dogs acknowledge commands and their names not because they comprehend the meaning behind the word but because they learn to associate certain words and gestures with specific actions.

Obvious? Probably. True? I don’t know; I’m not a dog scientist.

But whether right or wrong, here’s how I know it to be fact.

While I was walking down the street, I overheard a local telling their dog to “vámonos.” This sort of thing always lifts my spirits. The idea of Spanish-speaking dogs will never not be funny to me.

As far as I was concerned, this encounter ended there. If I was still thinking about it, the thoughts were beyond the reach of my conscious awareness.

That is, until my subconscious connected the dots a little later at the gym. As my trainer shouted “codo,” I instinctively responded with a small step forward followed by a rear hand horizontal elbow to the pad. At the time, I had no idea “codo” translated to “elbow,” but I had been conditioned to perform that movement upon hearing that word.

In this way, I intuited how dogs hear humans.

Who knew that increased empathy for our four-legged companions would be an unintended byproduct of failing to grasp the Spanish language? Checkmate.

A weekend of reflection

There were two activities this weekend, which paired together, inspired reflection.

The first was a Friday night trip to a hole-in-the-wall gyro kitchen. I hesitate to use “restaurant” to avoid giving the wrong impression. The establishment consists of a kitchen and two foldaway tables, which make up the outdoor-only seating area, a fact which will be revisited in a moment.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Pictured: Good gyro. apocalypse”

Seeing these former (…obviously) heads of state, Nobel Prize winners, and other once-world-renowned individuals as bones in a box, I naturally revisited the thought of how I was spending my precious time on Earth.

So, with Socrates’ famous quote, “The unexamined life is not worth living,” on my mind, I found a nearby patio, ordered some empanadas and a beer to wash down all the death, and jotted down a few notes.

Here are some main reasons I’ve decided to be without a home base indefinitely.

Pattern Interrupt

Here is what I said in "The Sunday Succulent – November 30, 2022" from Mexico City:

Before I left Indy, a close friend asked me why I wanted to come down to Mexico (and his wife quipped I should go to a therapist instead — fair point).

One of the reasons I gave him was that it would be an opportunity to pattern interrupt from normal routine. We're all conditioned by our culture and upbringing, and I started catching myself operating on autopilot. After 29 years, everything from belief systems to standard interactions had begun to calcify.

This was a chance to do a sort of reset.

I was excited to encounter new situations and observe how I handled them.

Aside from being a year older, the sentiment holds.

Personal Circle of Order

Growth happens when we straddle the border between order (familiarity) and chaos (new experiences).

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" individual.

Travel is but one of an infinite number of ways to accomplish this.

Enhanced Perception and Observation

In novel situations, our perception is enhanced. As environments become familiar and routine, our perception loses force. This is a feature, not a bug. Our brain is hardwired to conserve energy. But sometimes, it’s fun to throw that sucker into high gear and rev up the five senses.

This also applies to observation of the self.

“And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.”

Prior to semi-moving abroad, I thought of travel more as an escape from reality than immersion into a new reality. Rather than constrain myself to a little corner of the world, I want to encounter as much of its natural beauty and diversity of cultures as I reasonably can.

This all can be tied up neatly with a quote from The Alchemist.

“Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.”

(If those all sound too high-minded and grandiose, you might be happy to hear that the world-class steak and wine, cost of living, proximity to other destinations, and opportunity to continue learning Spanish “poco a poco” also influenced my decision.)

Help needed!

My gym has begun asking me for song recommendations.

So, I’ve started a playlist called “Gringo Workout” (see below) to share with them. Please let me know which certified workout bangers I am missing.

The weight of America rests on our shoulders.
<iframe class="spotify-wrap playlist" Zimbabwe; 2008)

Due to this inflation and the Argentina government’s restrictions on foreign currency, there is a black market exchange rate for US dollars (USD) known as the blue dollar rate. This rate is considered closer to the actual market value of USD, which is preferred to the Argentine peso (ARS) as a safeguard against inflation.

At the time of this writing (it can fluctuate hourly), the blue dollar is 1,020/1 (USD 1 = ARS 1,020), and the official rate is 821/1. This means that, at the moment, you would have 20% more purchasing power with the blue dollar rate than the official exchange rate.

In other words, it would be fiscally irresponsible not to use the black market, blue dollar rate.

Quick sidenote: While writing this, a woman in her 70s or 80s walked by with a t-shirt that read, "Go climb a cactus." I hope you enjoy that as much as I did.

There are a few ways to get the blue dollar rate, but the most common advice is this:

Go to Florida Street, find someone shouting “cambio,” follow them to their Casa de Cambio, and make the exchange. Apparently, this works surprisingly well.

Luckily, my Airbnb host’s nephew runs a Casa de Cambio and lives nearby, so he delivers to my apartment, saving me time and back alley dealings.

His name, Franco Ferrari.

There's not much to say about Franco Ferrari other than that I'd rather have no other person on Earth as my money changer. And if this all sounds sketchy, I can assure you that Mr. Ferrari's service and attention to detail would shame most modern retailers and restaurants.
<div They are displayed on a large television monitor which overlooks the entrance.

And as far as one can discern personality through a screen, they're rather friendly.

Each time I enter, they greet me with a wave. And each time, I wave back.

The problem is, I'm pretty confident nobody's actually there. For multiple reasons, I believe they are pre-recorded, and the door opening triggers them to wave. I'm not 100% sure, but I am 51% sure.

This means that more likely than not, I am waving at an inanimate object each time I enter the building.

And every time I do, my sympathetic nervous system lights up my cheeks like a Christmas tree, and I curse myself for my foolishness.

Attribute it to my Midwestern upbringing, but in the less-than-likely chance there is a live person on the other side of that monitor, I can't and won't stop waving.

More Door-Related Mishaps

At the risk of spending too much digital real estate talking about digital doormen (and women), there was a brief moment this week when I was convinced they were a sham. Or at least not doing their job to serve and protect our building. (Although I still need to figure out how that would work.)

It was when I went to open my apartment door, and a man, clearly inside the apartment, began yelling.

I'll skip to the punchline: rather than walking up two flights of stairs to apartment 2D (my apartment), I had only walked up one flight to 1D (not my apartment).

I can think of no better on-the-spot language proficiency test than explaining why you're attempting to break and enter as the rightful occupant walks towards the door.

Do I use the preterite (fue) or imperfect (estaba) to represent 'I was'?

'To try' is 'intentar,' and 'ando' in Spanish is equivalent to 'ing' in English.

Ok, so 'Estaba intentando (I was trying)...'

Too much time has passed without me saying anything.

These thoughts went through my head in an interminable second.

At last, I succumbed to the tried and true "lo siento" and scrammed.

Observations

One of the more rewarding things that comes from writing The Succ is that it forces me to be more observant of what is happening around me.

To be clear, there is nothing groundbreaking here.

But daily, I feel more dialed in and perceptive to things I might otherwise miss.

Mrs. Officer(s). There appear to be two requirements to be a police officer here: 1) be a woman and 2) be attractive. The sight of a lady officer manhandling a drunk during the Super Bowl had me ready to act up.

'Buen dia' hit rate. Like waving to monitors, I can't help but tell people 'good day.' In Mexico, it was met with a 95%+ response rate. Here, it is closer to 40%. It just means I need to work harder.

Cocoliche. The Spanish spoken here could easily be confused with Italian. In Mexico, I could make out enough to get by OK in my day-to-day. Here, I can't understand a damn thing.

Walkability. Though massive, it's a highly walkable city. It's hard to imagine living anywhere that requires a car anytime soon.

No tacos, no problem. I love tacos. If I had to choose one food for the rest of my life, it would probably be tacos (the versatility!). But please don't worry about me. I can make do with steak and wine in the meantime.

Time warp. Yesterday, I got hungry at 6:00 pm. Big mistake. Every restaurant that looked good for dinner didn't open until 8:00 pm or later. As an attempt to throw them off my gringo scent and not be the first to arrive, I showed up at 8:30. Mission accomplished, I was second. The dinner rush, families and all, came as I was wrapping up around 9:30.

For those concerned, my new apartment is fantastic. I'm officially settled in.

Buenas noches and a great week ahead to all.

Ciao,

Sam

The Sunday Succulent - February 18, 2024

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades

Sam Reed

Bienvenidos to The Sunday Succulent.

It’s rumored that close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. That a miss is as good as a mile. And that you can be so close, yet so far.

I can confirm those rumors are true.

Case in point, my living situation in Buenos Aires.

I arrived last Sunday with minimal sleep but a positive attitude. The first order of business was finding a spot to watch the Super Bowl1. With that accomplished, I returned to my apartment post-game, whipped up an abbreviated Succ, and had a restful night filled with sweet dreams.

Everything was going according to plan.

Then came Monday. With it, the morning sun illuminated the plenitude of my studio apartment. I awoke to an abundance of natural light shining in from my open-air patio, a comfortable bed with an (almost) suitable number of pillows, a satisfactory workstation, a kitchen with all the amenities, and a bidet with enough water pressure to make Lil Nas X blush.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" And continued to drop for six hours at a volume and bass level that rendered my falsely advertised soundproof windows completely ineffective.

That’s how I discovered my apartment was connected to a popular nightclub2. (When a nightclub opens at 11:45pm and closes at 6:00am, 96% of its business hours are during the morning. Therefore, morning club would be a more accurate business category for Beatflow. But I digress.)

On Tuesday, I sleepily reasoned that surely it was an outlier due to Monday being the last night of Carnaval. (Hint: it wasn’t an outlier, Shirley.)

At this point, I found the club’s lineup on an Argentinian ticketing platform, so I was ready and helplessly waiting for the bass to drop on Thursday, which it did. This was followed by Friday’s concert which would have put a sperm whale to shame.

So Saturday was spent finding and moving to a new Airbnb.

After arriving to mold-covered walls, broken appliances, and general filth throughout the apartment, Saturday afternoon, evening, and night were spent appealing to the better nature of the new host and Airbnb support staff for a full refund3.

Today was back to square one, looking for a new home, which is thankfully found and settled.

So close, and yet so far.

Due to these unforeseen circumstances, I wasn’t able to explore this weekend. I should have some initial observations ready for next Sunday.

But, some important lessons were punctuated in this first week in Argentina. (I’m exhausted so these will not be checked for grammar or punctuation and I’ll probably wake up horrified that I wrote them at all. But they’re on my mind, and it’s unlikely anyone will read this far, so why not?)

Lesson #1: Money vs. Time/QoL

While the original outcome was no bueno, the decision to double up and book a new Airbnb was obvious. Money is a tool, freedom is the goal. In this case, the freedom to be able to sleep in peace was nearly priceless.

How many times do we sacrifice (non-renewable) time, or quality of (probably non-renewable) life for a dollar amount that is immaterial in the grand scheme of things? What’s your time worth?

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Lesson #2: Trigger Events

The decision to book another Airbnb was made at 6:00am on Saturday morning after a sleepless night of tossing and turning. At that moment, another month and a half of that situation was unthinkable. So, why after I finally got my refund late Saturday night from the second Airbnb did I briefly consider the idea of staying in the current Airbnb (“everything is great except for the morning club in my bedroom”)?

Humans are creatures of habit and comfort, and big decisions are made at moments when we feel compelled to act.

An example of this in everyday life would be someone in a comfortable but unfulfilling job (been there). The comfort is more dangerous than complete misery. Misery requires action and therefore change.

An example of this in business would be that someone isn’t going to buy your product or service just because you say it’s great. Even if they believe you. There has to be a significant reason for them to trade their resources and status quo to try something new.

Lesson #3: Anger = Self-administered Poison

Today I had to meet the host of the doomed Airbnb to return the keys. I was self-righteous in my anger. And I was extremely cold when we met. Not rude. Not mean. But cold. I had worked up that anger before the meeting after going over everything from the mold to the refund refusal, and the fact that I had only gotten two hours of sleep the night before. I carried it with me after the meeting for about three blocks before I realized it was not only useless to be angry, but counterproductive and stupid. It was an uncomfortable feeling in my chest. And total preoccupation of my mind. When I realized this, I snapped out of it and my entire mood changed. It felt like being poisoned and then given the antidote.

Then, I felt bad for the previous interaction.

I think there is an underlying code that we look for in other people and how we think they should behave. It’s unique to each of us and relatively inflexible, although it changes with us. People who behave within that code, we allow ourselves to become intimate with. People who operate outside of that code, we keep outside of our circle. But even with those people, we can and should still remain kind.

It’s kind of like receiving poor service at a restaurant. You don’t make a scene, you just don’t return.

Bonus: Packing list

For anyone interested, here is what I carry in my two backpacks. We might like mystery in entertainment. Does the totem topple or is Cobb still stuck in a dream?

But we tend to be uncomfortable with mystery when it comes to the big questions about life, like its meaning.

I think the whole consciousness thing made us that way. From our first footsteps, humans have been meaning-making machines.

And I think science, for all its achievements, has made us overconfident, even arrogant, about our understanding of the universe, existential or otherwise.

And so, this big, mysterious question has been attempted by everyone from philosophers to religious teachers. Scientists to Daryl in Accounting.

Confucius, the father of Eastern philosophy, taught meaning through lifelong self-improvement and relationships with other humans leading to harmony within society and the greater universe.

Aristotle believed that eudaimonia, or a type of permanent joy and fulfillment attained by a life well-lived, was the ultimate aim.

Thomas Aquinas, one of the most influential people in the Christian faith, believed the telos of humans was happiness which came through understanding God.

Legendary physicist Richard Feynman said about the meaning of life, “If we take everything into account, not only what the ancients knew, but all of what we know today that they didn’t know, then I think that we must frankly admit that we do not know. But, in admitting this, we have probably found the open channel.”

Daryl rightfully finds meaning in assets equal to liabilities plus equities.

As for me? I’m not sure there is a meaning.

And I’m not sure there isn’t.

If there is a greater meaning, I would guess it’s beyond our limits of comprehension. Maybe not. Maybe we’re responsible for making our own meaning.

The point being, I don’t know. And I don’t know that it matters.

I’m alive now. Against all odds. phrase from the late David Foster Wallace, it has become little more than a banal platitude.

But, like the Golden Rule, this advice, if followed, can have world-changing implications.

When someone (typically from a high horse like the one I’m riding right now) offers this advice, it’s usually inferred, from both the giver and receiver, that to be kind is to go above and beyond the normal call of duty.

Even Tim Ferriss, whom I deeply respect and admire from afar, often ends his podcasts with “be a little kinder than is necessary”.

When did we set the bar so low for simply not being an ass?

I can’t remember the last time I heard someone say, “be more honest than is necessary”.

It can be difficult.

In reality, and here’s another platitude, it’s simple to be kind but it’s certainly not always easy.

We are, by nature, the center of our own universe. And life can be difficult. We have our own problems to deal with, dammit.

On top of that, not everyone is born with a sunny disposition.

So how can we be kind if it doesn’t come naturally or we’re having an off day? The same way you fall asleep each night. First, you pretend.

In a given situation, imagine what an especially kind person would do–and then do that.

It will feel unnatural. It will feel forced. That’s fine. The more acts of kindness that you perform, the more kindness becomes a part of your identity.

Ever heard the term “fake it until you make it”? That applies here.

Why does it matter?

You might be saying a couple of things to yourself: 1) I don’t believe you, and 2) why should I care?

I might read your mind and respond: 1) what does it hurt to try?, and 2) because of the world-changing implications I mentioned earlier and meant literally.

Whether it’s a product of the current social climate or it’s always been this way and we just view the past through rose-colored glasses, there seems to be a serious lack of trust in humanity.

People tend to approach new encounters with other people by assuming bad intent.

If you doubt that, the next time you’re at the store or a restaurant, casually approach someone and watch their initial reaction. I would wager at least 8 times out of 10, the reaction will be defensive.

But the moment you are kind, or are genuinely trying to be, watch that other person drop their defensive posture almost immediately.

The more often this happens, the more trust others are going to have in the goodness of humanity. This will lead to more kindness, which will lead to more trust in humanity, which will lead to more kindness, ad infinitum.

It becomes a snowball effect that can have an impact on future generations.

How’s that for world-changing?

But I’m just one person.

And snowballs begin with a single flake of snow.

At some point, everyone dreams of changing the world. You have the opportunity to change the world every day as soon as you walk out of your door.

By choosing to be a kind person.

Besides, it’s good for you. Being kind will make you a happier person. One of those ever-elusive win-wins.

I’ll end with a popular quote that I’ve added on to at the end: “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. [The future of the world depends on it].”

Thanks for reading 1525!
